Community Action Agency Expands Service Area

March 2017 – The Community Action Agency of Western Connecticut, Inc. (CAAWC), has been designated the Community Action Agency (CAP) for three new communities:  New Canaan, Weston, and Wilton. CAAWC is a private, nonprofit corporation providing supportive services and financial assistance to over 15,000 low income families and individuals residing in 25 towns in western Connecticut.  They are Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Canaan, Cornwall, Danbury, Darien, Greenwich, Kent, New Canaan, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, North Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Salisbury, Sharon, Sherman, Stamford, Warren, Washington, Weston, and Wilton.

CAAWC has been serving western Connecticut for over 51 years.  The mission is to provide social services and programs to low-income individuals and families in western Connecticut to help them stabilize and improve their lives.  The programs delivered include: energy assistance, affordable childcare in a NAEYC accredited center, case management services, employment services & job skills training, food pantry, diaper program, housing counseling and assistance, ESL classes, and Tax Assistance (VITA).

CAAWC’s approach to the provision of services follows the Human Services Infrastructure (H.S.I.) model – “no wrong door.”  No matter how a client enters the agency, staff approaches the situation holistically to ensure services and resources needed to help the client resolve their issue(s) are identified.  This is a client driven model and CAAWC staff is supportive in providing internal support services or linking the individual or family to other community services.

“We have served these communities on an interim basis for several years and are proud to be designated to be the official CAP for these communities,” said Michelle H. James, Executive Director.
